Eating Disorders

At ECS Psychological Services we are proud to offer therapy for eating disorders provided by experts in the field. It is estimated that five million people suffer from eating disorders.  That constitutes five percent of adolescent and adult women and one percent of men who suffer from anorexia nervosa, bulimia or binge eating disorder.  Over one thousand people die each year from anorexia nervosa alone.   Others experience a less severe but stressful relationship with food. Symptoms of an eating disorder or a less severe food related issue can include:

  • Food restricting
  • Low body weight
  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Distorted body image
  • Absence of menstrual periods
  • Consuming large amounts of food in short periods of time
  • Feeling out of control when eating
  • Weight control through self induced vomiting
  • Laxative abuse
  • Diuretic abuse, and/or
  • Excessive exercise
Treatment for eating disorders consists of psychotherapy, nutritional therapy and sometimes medication.  Here at ECS Psychological Services, treatment also involves collaboration with the patients Primary Care Physician, nutritionist and any other caregiver that the patient selects. The best prognosis is early intervention, so if you suspect a loved one may be struggling with an eating disorder or other food related difficulty, we can help.
